THE INSTITUTE FOR THE ADVANCED STUDY IN BLACK AESTHETICS
MissionThe Institute for Advanced Study in Black Aesthetics recognizes Aesthetics (also spelled æsthetics or esthetics) is a branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, with the creation and appreciation of beauty. It is more scientifically defined as the study of sensory or sensori-emotional values, sometimes called judgments of sentiment and taste. More broadly, scholars in the field define aesthetics as "critical reflection on art, culture and nature."
For the purposes of The Institute for Advanced Study in Black Aesthetics, students will expand on this field of study by looking beneath the surface politics of Aesthetics and Formalism. Using our own eyes to focus on the visual arts and literature of Black artists globally, to see what is reflected in the social conscience and critical judgments of anti-formalist artists such as Howardena Pindell, Adrian Piper, and Kerry James Marshall, just to name a few. Uses of the Institute: 1. Study art with tools such as writing, documentary and feature films, art history, museum visits, popular culture. 2. Classes in how African American Art is evaluated in art history, theory, criticism, film / media. 3. Events - lectures and seminars on visual culture by artist, critics, curators, historians. 4. Publish a biannual international journal: The Journal of Black Aesthetics. 5. Curate exhibitions. |
